Five members of an ultra-conservative group of Idaho lawmakers lost their Republican primary elections on Tuesday, in a bruising result for the right-wing branch of the party.

The Republicans, who are all part of the Idaho Legislature’s Gang of Eight, whose members believe in spending cuts and limited government, lost to other Republican challengers, according to unofficial election results cited by the Idaho Capitol Sun.

However, the other three members of the Gang of Eight won, meaning they will advance to the general election in November. All 105 seats in the Idaho Legislature are up for election this year.

The primary results signal a volatile power struggle inside the Republican Party in one of the country’s most reliably red states, where the GOP primary effectively decides who will hold office in November.

This is a developing story. More to follow.
