Robert Redford had a close and special working relationship with Brad Pitt before his death.
Redford directed 1992’s A River Runs Through It, which is where the duo first met. Nearly a decade later, they appeared alongside each other in the 2001 thriller Spy Game.
Over the years, the two strengthened their close bond with Redford even praising Pitt as a “special, smart, talented, hard-worker” in a past interview. Redford also called his former collaborator “humble.”
News broke on Tuesday, September 16, that Redford died at age 89. The actor’s rep confirmed to The New York Times that was at his Utah home when he died in his sleep.

The actors worked together on two movies. Redford directed Pitt in A River Runs Through It, which is where their mentorship started. The movie was based on Norman Maclean‘s 1976 semi-autobiographical novella and Redford helped adapt it for the screen. The movie has been said to be Pitt’s breakout role.
Almost 10 years later, Redford and Pitt reunited onscreen for Spy Game. The 2001 movie had the two sharing the screen as CIA operatives during the Cold War.

Redford once recalled clocking Pitt’s starpower the first time they met.
“When he first came in, he had a look about him,” he recalled. “I said, ‘Yeah, you’re looking at it. He’s going to succeed.’”
Pitt also discussed his experience with Redford in a 1996 interview.
“Redford made us better,” Pitt said at the time. “He was the real star of the film. The way he put it together. The way he told the story and he elevated us.”

Pitt has yet to share a reaction to Redford’s death. However, Daily Mail obtained photos of Pitt on the Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood sequel set in Los Angeles. This is the first time the actor was spotted publicly following Redford’s death news.
