A former staffer to Alan Jones told friends the broadcaster had worn an open robe around him at home and had sent him explicit text messages, a court has heard.
Two friends of complainant “C”, who has accused Jones of unwanted kissing and touching almost 20 years ago, gave statements to police that were tendered in the former 2GB host’s criminal trial on Monday.
One of the friends said “C” had told him Jones would “give me a massage” and “touch me on the leg when I was driving him”, the Downing Centre Local Court heard.
The friend told police that “C” had also told him: “When I would be at Alan’s house, he would be wearing a robe [and] it would be open.”
The man said “C” made the comments “in a lighthearted way”.
“I never asked ‘C’ directly about what he meant by these comments because we were young at the time,” he said. “I wasn’t comfortable asking him more about it.”
The man said that in 2023, “C” had told friends “he had received a text message from Alan a couple of years beforehand at Christmas where Alan wrote … something like, ‘I hope you and your big c— enjoy your Christmas’.”
A second friend said in a statement that he had a memory of having a conversation with “C” in which the complainant made an “offhand remark to me about a text message he had received from Alan” asking him to send a photo of his penis.
The man said that “C” told him Jones sent him messages like this sometimes.
“I believe ‘C’ told me he just deletes the messages,” the witness said. He said “C” had not shown him the message, and he had “never seen any messages between ‘C’ and Alan”.
Jones, 85, is standing trial on 20 counts of indecent assault and two counts of sexual touching without consent relating to six male complainants. The alleged assaults span a 17-year period from 2003 to 2020.
Jones denies any of the alleged physical acts occurred.
Of the 22 charges, eight indecent assault charges relate to “C” and involve alleged touching of the complainant’s penis over his clothing or kissing.
Another friend of “C” gave evidence in court last month that the complainant had told him in 2023 that “Alan used to ‘full grab him on the c— ’, or words to that [effect].”
“He seemed quite agitated and quite distressed when he was talking,” the witness said.
The complainant was “very intoxicated”, the man said, and had told him he had spoken to The Sydney Morning Herald’s chief investigative reporter, Kate McClymont, about his allegations.
The court heard that the friend of “C” signed a police statement in 2024, which said the complainant had “made the odd comment” to him over the years that “Alan was in love with him”. He said “C” told him that Jones would flirt with him in person and in text messages.
The trial continues.
