A leading West Australian cancer researcher has pleaded not guilty to accusations he assaulted a family member in front of two children.

Dr Indunil Weerasena.

Oncologist Dr Indunil Weerasena, who has previously specialised in breast cancer, was charged in December in City Beach with unlawfully assault and thereby did bodily harm with circumstances of aggravation.

Weerasena appeared in Perth Magistrate’s Court on Friday and pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The court heard the 50-year-old allegedly assaulted the woman in front of two children, aged 10 and 13.

His lawyer said there was about three hours of body worn camera and CCTV that needed to be examined.

He was awarded the state government-funded Cancer Research Fellowship for the WA Cancer and Palliative Care Network program, and was one of seven researchers sharing in $1.2 million.

The research was titled “Integrated Cluster 2 Breast Cancers: The Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing”, and aimed at detecting and treating the aggressive and difficult-to-detect form of cancer.

Weerasena previously worked at Fiona Stanley Hospital and now works at St John of God in Bunbury.

There are currently no restrictions on his practice according to the Australian Health Practitioners Agency.
