A man has been shot dead and another man wounded in an early morning attack inside a western Sydney unit.

Emergency services were called to reports of a shooting at a unit complex on Shale Street in Lidcombe about 4am on Monday.

A 38-year-old man died in hospital after being treated for gunshot wounds by paramedics.

A second man was also assaulted at the scene and taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The shooting took place inside a unit, on a high-density residential street bordering Accor Stadium.

A crime scene has been declared as police investigate the incident, appealing for information from the public.

Detectives were directing investigations outside the complex on Monday morning, where officers were seen leaving the unit complex carrying large bags.
