Mary Beth Barone seems to have addressed rumors of a romance with Joe Alwyn.
“Hard launching this project,” Barone, 35, captioned a Tuesday, September 22, Instagram carousel that celebrated the announcement of her upcoming film with Alwyn, also 35. The comedian opened her slideshow with a screenshot of a Deadline article that featured photos of herself next to Alwyn.
The tongue-in-cheek post comes after rumors swirled that the pair could be romantically involved when they were spotted walking in New York City together earlier this month.
To poke fun at the online speculation further, Barone, who wrote the upcoming film Still We Met and will star opposite Alwyn in the project, added photos of herself out and about with her future costar. One shot showed the duo smiling for the camera while enjoying drinks in a dimly lit restaurant and another showed the actor hamming it up in a darkened bar.
Fans took to the post’s comments section to praise Barone on her lighthearted reaction to the romance rumors. “And the way you drummed up press for this!!! There are easier ways to tell me you’re a classic movie star!” wrote one Instagram user, while another wrote, “OK so that is what all of the pics were.”
During the pair’s NYC outing, they walked along Williamsburg Bridge together before dropping into a local bar, E! News reported, noting that Barone was even wearing Alwyn’s baseball cap inside the bar.
Us previously reported that Alwyn — who famously dated Taylor Swift for six years until their 2023 split — sparked a budding romance with Sarah Pidgeon. A source exclusively revealed in June that Alwyn and Pidgeon, 30, had hit it off after meeting at an industry event earlier this year. “They are casually dating and are really into each other,” the insider told Us at the time.
The source also noted that Alwyn and the Love Story star had been “going on low-key dates in NYC for a few months now trying to keep things under the radar.” They were most recently spotted walking together in the Big Apple on Sunday, September 20, per photos published by Deux Moi.
“Both Sarah and Joe are very intellectual, private and laid-back people, so it feels like a really compatible match,” the insider explained this summer. “They share similar personalities and enjoy spending time together away from the spotlight.”
For Barone’s part, the “Ride” podcast host has been linked to multiple stars in recent months, including Emily in Paris’ Lucas Bravo and Riverdale alum KJ Apa. Neither relationships were publicly confirmed.
