The Stafford family has added an important mid-season acquisition.

Kelly Stafford, the wife of Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, revealed that the family has welcomed a new four-legged friend to their household in a golden retriever named Lucy.

“New family member,” Kelly, 36, wrote via her Instagram Story on Thursday, November 6, over a photo of Matthew, 37, carrying Lucy up the stairs. The family’s other dog, George, is also pictured at the top of the stairs, waiting to play with his new friend.

Other photos in Kelly’s story showed her and Matthew’s daughter Hunter walking Lucy, as well as Lucy in the car for “school pickup” and the two pups snoozing on the couch.

Pets have long been an important part of the Stafford family. Before they brought home George in 2023, Kelly and Matthew mourned the loss of their 13-year-old dog Marley the year before.

“Why is it such a surprise and so hard? Dogs aren’t supposed to outlive us, we know it when we make them part of our family. So why does it feel like it’s never coming?” Kelly wrote via Instagram after Marley’s death.

“I woke up this morning without a face in front of me that I’ve been used to waking up to for the past 13 years,” she continued. “The room didn’t feel as warm or cozy. I sat up and saw the empty dog bed at my side and the tears started rolling again.”

Lucy’s arrival comes as Kelly is taking a break from her “The Morning After” podcast. She announced in October that she would be stepping back from the microphone for “about a month” to focus on her mental health.

“I’ve just been kind of struggling with where I see this going,” she explained on the October 2 episode. “Obviously, I have four daughters and a husband, and this podcast is another one of my babies, and I love it a lot, but not as much as them.”

In addition to Hunter, 7, Kelly and Matthew share 8-year-old twins Sawyer and Chandler and daughter Tyler, 5.

“I feel like we can all lean on each other now,” she continued. “I leaned on you guys, I hope that you leaned on this podcast, either for laughter or just to realize that not everything is perfect and it doesn’t have to be.”

Kelly added that her hiatus would probably come “as a surprise” to Matthew, though she was sure to say it did not signal the end of the podcast overall.

“For right now, just for somewhat of my mental health and it’s also midseason, there has been changes in this podcast,” she said. “I just think I need to take a step back and kind of figure out what the plan is. I’m not saying this is over. I really need a second.”

As for Matthew, his Rams are 6-2 on the season, coming off a 34-10 home win over the New Orleans Saints in their most recent game. With 21 touchdown passes and only two interceptions in eight games, he is an early candidate to win his first NFL MVP award.
