Matthew Stafford remains the starting quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams, something head coach Sean McVay has made very clear.
However, at 38 years old, Stafford is operating on a year-to-year basis when it comes to his NFL future. With that in mind, the Rams used the No. 13 overall pick in this year’s draft to select Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson — a somewhat surprising move.
There was some initial curiosity about how Stafford might feel about the decision, but according to McVay, he fully understands and supports it. Speaking to ESPN during Day 3 of the NFL Draft, McVay praised Stafford’s response.
“He couldn’t be more of a stud,” “When you’re an elite competitor the way he is, he responded exactly the way I would want to. He’s going to put his arm around this guy… He’s like, ‘I understand it.’ He’s earned the right to be year to year, and if he tells me he wants to play three more years, no one would be more excited about that than me.”

There have been rumors about Matthew Stafford potentially signing an extension, but for now, he’s entering the final year of his deal in Los Angeles. While the Los Angeles Rams now have a deep quarterback room with Ty Simpson, Stetson Bennett, and Jimmy Garoppolo, the plan still appears to revolve around Stafford and however long he chooses to play.
The Rams are coming off a trip to the NFC Championship Game and were just a handful of plays away from beating the Seattle Seahawks.
For Simpson, this presents a major opportunity to learn and develop behind Stafford in a quarterback room loaded with experience and talent.
