There are some big changes happening around the Dallas Mavericks organization.
Earlier this month, the franchise hired veteran NBA executive Masai Ujiri as the team’s new president and alternate governor. And on Tuesday evening, the team parted ways with five-year head coach Jason Kidd.
Now, NBA fans are wondering about the future of veteran guard Kyrie Irving.
Ujiri addressed those questions when speaking to reporters on Wednesday.
“Kevin Durant once told me that there’s only one Kyrie [Irving] walking around in the world. I think we have to figure out a way, how Kyrie fits with our program,” Ujiri said. “I’ve had those conversations with Kyrie, up till yesterday. I think Kyrie will fit.”
“There’s a huge curiosity in our minds to see how Kyrie fits playing with Cooper Flagg,” he continued. “And I think we owe this organization that. … My goal is to put him in a place where he’s successful here.”

Irving missed the entirety of the 2025-26 NBA season as he recovered from the ACL tear he suffered in March of 2025. Through 128 games with the Mavericks since joining the team in 2023, the All-Star point guard averaged 25.5 points, 5.1 assists and 4.9 rebounds per game.

Flagg started his rookie season at point guard due to Irving’s injury absence, going away from his natural position. With Irving on the court, the 2025-26 Rookie of the Year can play more off the ball.
