Former U.S. Senator Mitt Romney issued a public tribute following the death of Russell M. Nelson, the leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Romney, who is a member of the church, noted Nelson’s “prophetic words and his love for Jesus Christ” in a post shared on X.

“President Russell M. Nelson will be known for the scores of new temples, accelerating the growth of the Church, centering the gospel in the home, his prophetic words and his love for Jesus Christ, but for Ann and me, one thing touched us most personally and profoundly: his kindness,” Romney said.

Newsweek contacted Romney’s office for comment via online form on Sunday.

Nelson died on Saturday at the age of 101 at his home in Salt Lake City, according to church officials. He became president of the church in 2018.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
