A couple who love petting their neighbor’s corgi but struggled with the fence have melted hearts with their adorable solution.

After bringing home a corgi puppy in November 2024, Katie Sammon has loved seeing the precious bond that 10-month-old Poppy developed with the neighbors. Sammon, of Minnesota, told Newsweek that they had “an instant connection,” and they interact over the fence on most days.

Poppy will often put her paws against the fence when she wants fuss from the neighbors, Gary and Dorothy. They’re more than happy to oblige, especially as they don’t have any dogs of their own.

“Poppy will often wait at the fence if she knows they’re outside waiting to say hello,” Sammon said. “If we are taking her on a walk and they are outside, we will stop over so they can get some pets up close. Gary and Dorothy are retired, and Gary usually will hangout out in his garage working on projects, so anytime Poppy goes outside, she says hi to him from across the fence.”

Unfortunately, Sammon explained that they have trouble reaching Poppy over the fence sometimes. But that wasn’t going to stop them. So, they came up with the ultimate solution to offer the best fuss.

Indeed, Sammon even joked to her neighbors that they should “build some sort of stairs” for Poppy so they could reach her with ease.

Lo and behold, a few days later, that’s exactly what she spotted outside.

She saw a set of “hand-crafted steps” that her neighbor designed with spare wood. It’s a perfect solution for Poppy to stand on and get a taller perch.

“It was exciting to get to see them easily petting her from over the fence. It really warmed my heart, especially because they love animals and used to have dogs of their own but have gotten to an age where it’s too difficult to care for a dog full-time. I think that’s why they cherish their time with Poppy and love seeing her daily,” Sammon said.

She captured a video of the moment she saw the steps and shared it on TikTok (@datgingerkatie). In just a matter of days, the video has gone viral with over 3.9 million views and more than 450,000 likes at the time of writing.

Internet users can’t get enough of the neighbor’s adorable solution to give Poppy all the belly rubs and scratches she deserves. Sammon has been blown away by the online reaction, especially as she never imagined it would generate quite so much attention.

She showed the video to her neighbors and told them it went viral. In return, they jested that they could make a business out of “making dog steps” for other people too.

Sammon told Newsweek: “There were a lot of comments calling them Poppy’s grandparents, which I think is really sweet. Poppy goes over to see them in their own fenced yard quite a bit too, but this is just a sweet little way that she can say hi when she’s outside during her daily routine.”

After melting so many hearts online, the viral video has amassed over 1,000 comments on TikTok already. Many people praised the undeniable bond between Poppy and her favorite neighbors.

One comment reads: “they’re family now.”

Another TikTok user wrote: “I love that it’s high enough they can reach her but low enough she can’t escape. How sweet!”

While another person added: “I know good neighbors when I see them.”
