At 38, Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford delivered one of the most efficient and explosive seasons of his career in 2025.
He led the league with 4,707 passing yards and 46 touchdowns while guiding the Rams to a deep playoff run that ended just shy of the Super Bowl, falling 14-6 in the NFC Championship game to the Seattle Seahawks.
His performance not only made the Rams one of the NFL’s most electrifying teams to watch, but it also reshaped the entire MVP conversation, edging out a crowded field in one of the closest votes in decades.
But now, weeks after hoisting his first MVP trophy, a new development has taken that legacy to another level.
Stafford is set to wear a gold NFL shield on his jersey next season, an unprecedented honor tied directly to his MVP win.

He is now a Super Bowl champion, a first-team All-Pro honoree, and a three-time Pro Bowler, sitting sixth all-time in career passing yards (64,516) and seventh all-time in career touchdowns (423).
Yet, for all the stats and milestones, the MVP had always eluded him, until this past season.

The patch replaced the standard NFL shield with a gold-accented version on the jersey collar and was worn all season.
That was the first time in league history the NFL gave award winners a visible, in-game uniform distinction tied to performance.
However, while 2025 planted the seed, this feels like the league starting to build something bigger around it.
