Notre Dame’s Jeremiyah Love should be one of the happiest players in college football right now as he travels to New York City to see if he will be named the winner of the Heisman Trophy, but he isn’t.

The nation’s best running back is still down after the Fighting Irish were the first team out of the College Football Playoff, missing their shot for redemption after losing in last year’s championship game against the Ohio State Buckeyes.

For Love, it was an undeniable success of a season on an individual level, running for 1,372 yards and 18 touchdowns while also showing off his elite hands with 27 receptions and 280 yards. He was one of the biggest game-breaking players in college football in 2025, turning games that Notre Dame was hanging on to by a thread and making them blowout victories after a long run down the sidelines.

But as he’s being celebrated for his accomplishments, he still wonders what might have been if they’d been given a chance to play in the tournament.

“I’m just down about it,” said Love, who accepted the committee’s decision but wasn’t happy about it. “The team, in general, was in charge of our own destiny. We put ourselves into this situation.”

A projected first-round pick in April’s NFL Draft, Love won’t play another game for the Fighting Irish. The school turned down any bowl game participation following the announcement of the 12 teams to play in this year’s College Football Playoff.
