A senior police crash investigator has described the “confronting” scenes at the site of Wednesday’s fatal school bus crash outside Geelong.

Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Lineham of the Major Collision Investigation Unit said accidents involving children were especially challenging for emergency services responders.

“This scene was a very confronting when emergency services first arrived here,” Lineham said during a press conference.

“Any life lost on the road is one life too many, and it is particularly confronting and challenging when there’s children involved.

“The first members on scene to come across a bus with one child deceased and multiple children injured is incredibly confronting.”

Lineham said the 76-year-old driver of the bus was at Geelong Police Station talking to investigators and had undergone drug and alcohol tests, and investigators were awaiting results.

Police were still not sure what had caused the crash and would be conducting mechanical checks on the bus as well as looking at road conditions and speed as potential contributing factors.

No children had yet been interviewed, Lineham said, and although the bus was equipped with seatbelts, it was unclear whether they were being worn when the vehicle crashed.
