A man who decided to film his cat at night was left stunned when he saw the sweet gesture she did as he slept.
Nick Filippou, 34, was curious about what his rescue cat, named Minnie, gets up to during the night. She often moves around and even likes to climb into bed with him at times, so he set up a motion-detection camera to see what actually happens.
The device, which is placed beside the bed, captures 13-year-old Minnie wandering around and curling up beside her owner several times in the night. Filippou, from the U.S., told Newsweek that he has caught “some hilarious and touching moments” on the camera, with one in particular that melted his heart.
“Minnie doesn’t seem to notice the camera,” Filippou said. “Every night, she snuggles up next to me, and she’ll get mad when I go to bed without her.”
As Filippou slept one night, the pet-cam footage shows Minnie laying down beside him and even stretching her paw out to seemingly hold her owner’s hand. Indeed, since he caught that moment, Filippou has seen her do this many more times.
He continued: “That it’s typical Minnie because she’s just the sweetest cat I’ve ever known. We have a really great bond.”
Aside from holding Filippou’s hand, Minnie also likes to nest beside her sleeping owner and get under the covers, or sometimes she simply sniffs and nuzzles his face.
The adorable footage was shared on Minnie’s dedicated TikTok account (@officialiizcat) on May 2, and it has delighted internet users. The video has gone viral with over 622,000 views and more than 28,000 likes at the time of writing.
Other videos of Minnie’s nighttime antics have also gone viral in the past, with a clip from 2023 amassing more than 43.3 million views on TikTok.
Filippou has enjoyed growing Minnie’s fan base online, as he told Newsweek that her TikTok followers “love her” and can’t get enough of the footage.
Minnie has certainly come a long way since she was rescued from the shelter a decade ago. She was part of a trap, neuter, release program, and she has the clipped ear to show for it, to help feral cats in the area.
“The shelter owner said that Minnie would give anything to have a home of her own, so I adopted her right then 10 years ago. Since then, she’s been the happiest house cat and the best companion I could ever ask for,” Filippou said.
The adorable clip of Minnie appearing to hold her owner’s hand has amazed social-media users, leading to more than 240 comments on TikTok so far.
Among the responses, one TikTok user commented: “she’s keeping watch over you. Protecting you while you’re vulnerable.”
Another person wrote: “my baby does this, and I wouldn’t change it for the world.”
A third replied: “Aww she’s looking after you.”
And one comment read: “There is no better feeling than this in the world.”
