Jordan Love has only missed four regular-season games for the Green Bay Packers since becoming the starting quarterback in 2023.
In 2024, Love suffered an MCL sprain in the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, and he missed time with a concussion last year. Malik Willis stepped in every time, and he reignited his NFL career.
Willis cashed in on his limited opportunities with the Packers by signing a reported three-year, $67.5 million contract with the Miami Dolphins as an unrestricted free agent in March.
With Willis becoming the new QB1 in Miami, an opportunity opened up for Tyrod Taylor in Green Bay.
The Packers announced their signing of Taylor, 36, and subsequent release of Desmond Ridder on Monday.
While Willis arrived in Green Bay as a reclamation project, Taylor has been there, done that.
“Taylor is the only quarterback in NFL history with 10,000-plus passing yards, 2,000-plus rushing yards, 70-plus passing TDs, 20-plus rushing TDs, and fewer than 35 interceptions,” the Packers shared in their official announcement.
Before Josh Allen became the King of Buffalo, Taylor quarterbacked the Bills team that snapped the franchise’s 17-year playoff drought in 2017.
Taylor hasn’t been a franchise starting quarterback since departing Buffalo after the 2017 season, though he did have to start five games for the Giants after Daniel Jones went down in 2023. The 2011 sixth-round pick has also been a backup quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans, and New York Jets.
Taylor has struggled with various injuries throughout his career. Most infamously, he suffered a punctured lung while receiving a pain-killing injection to treat fractured ribs in September 2020. Taylor had started that season as the Chargers’ QB1, but his unfortunate injury launched Justin Herbert’s career.
The Packers just need Taylor to be available if the usually durable Love can’t go. Ideally, Green Bay hopes Taylor never sees the field.
