Penn State achieved a win in this weekend’s Pinstripe Bowl to cap off a season that included the firing of its head coach, James Franklin. With Franklin out, Terry Smith became the team’s interim head coach and helped guide them to a college bowl game, where they defeated the Clemson Tigers, 22-10.
The Nittany Lions held the Tigers to just a field goal in the first half and a touchdown in the second. PSU received a big game from quarterback Ethan Grunkenmeyer, who threw for 262 yards and two touchdowns. Additionally, wide receiver Trebor Pena had 100 receiving yards with a touchdown, and running back Quinton Martin Jr. had 101 rushing yards.
Following the Nittany Lions’ victory and trophy celebration, Smith spoke with reporters about the significance of the win as the program moves forward with new head coach Matt Campbell next season.
“I’m ready to pass the torch on to Coach Campbell,” Smith said, adding, “He’s an amazing individual and leader, and Penn State’s in great hands. I’m ready to help him achieve greatness.”

Smith’s comments show his commitment to the program, as he’ll remain on the staff under Campbell. Rather than campaign for a job elsewhere, he acknowledged how significant the head coaching job is and the importance of keeping things aligned at the program.
“I thought it was a big job when I was an assistant,” Smith told reporters, adding, “Then I got in this seat and realized this is an even bigger job.”
He referenced the many decisions involved in being a head coach that he hadn’t been aware of, calling it a “great ride” for him to gain this experience.
After becoming interim head coach earlier this month, there was buzz that Smith might become the team’s permanent head coach earlier this season, with various players reportedly lobbying for him. He achieved a 4-3 record in his time as interim coach.
With Smith as coach for the remainder of their season, a system was created that players bought into, and many chose to play in the Pinstripe Bowl rather than opt out. That included Dani Dennis-Sutton.
The defensive standout recorded two sacks in his team’s win. Following the game, he told reporters he was dedicated to playing throughout the season and in a bowl game, lending credibility to Smith’s leadership and commitment to keeping Penn State moving forward.
Smith mentioned that having reliable players in preparation for the bowl game also helped the Nittany Lions maintain consistency on both sides of the ball. The interim head coach voiced that he believed these fundamental aspects of the game should carry over to next season and beyond.
Despite previous uncertainty and disappointment with the Penn State program, Smith’s comments show his confidence that they’re heading in the right direction as Campbell takes the reins next season.
