Professional golfers are known for their etiquette as the sport is known as the gentleman’s game. But that is not always the case, just ask Shane Lowry.

During the second round of the 2025 PGA Championship, Lowry went berserk, wreaking havoc on the 8th fairway at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina.

After the Irishman’s tee shot landed in the fairway on the par-4 8th, his ball landed in someone else’s pitch mark. That prompted the Open Championship winner to ask for relief.

That request was refused by officials, but there was more to the story.

“You hit a lovely tee-shot and you’re not expecting that,” Lowry said to the Irish Independent.

“Standing there with 40 or 50 yards to that pin off the fairway, it’s an easy pitch shot for me. Then I walk away making bogey….”

Lowry’s approach found the bunker, which led to him dropping a shot. Immediately after his pitch, Lowry lost his composure and destroyed part of the fairway with a violent swing.

Immediately after the shot, Lowry could be heard yelling “F*** this place.” But apparently some of that frustration did not come solely from his shot.

“It was just that the ESPN guy was a bit too in there involved when he wasn’t asked to be and that’s what annoyed me a lot,” Lowry said. “I was just asking the referee and the ESPN guy comes straight over and he’s like, ‘That’s not your pitch mark’. And I’m like, ‘That’s not for you to talk about’. That’s for me to call a rules official and decide what happens.”

The Clara, Ireland native would ultimately miss a 20-footer for par. He ended up missing the cut by a single stroke.

“I felt like I played alright. But that’s like every day I play this golf course,” said Lowry. “It’s probably one of the only venues that I’ve never played well at that we play on tour every year. So what can I say?”

Shane Lowry remains in search of his second career major title. He will have two more chances this year, with the latter coming at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland where he will surely be a fan favorite.
