A couple of key members of the Seattle Seahawks are banged up heading into the Super Bowl in Santa Clara, California against the New England Patriots this weekend, including the one guy no team can ever really afford to lose.
Starting quarterback Sam Darnold has battled an oblique injury throughout Seattle’s playoff run, and this week has been no different.
“Seahawks QB Sam Darnold was once again limited in Wednesday’s practice by his oblique injury, but he said earlier today that last week’s ‘bye week’ helped him feel better,” ESPN’s Jeff Darlington reported via X. “He said he’ll continue to do rehab this week. No surprises here. Darnold remains on track to start.”

Darnold is coming off arguably the best game of his NFL career in the NFC Championship against the division rival Los Angeles Rams, a team that has largely tormented Darnold over the last two years. He put up 346 yards and three touchdowns on 25-of-36 passing against L.A. in the Seahawks’ four-point win.
As such, any health concerns for Darnold heading into the biggest game of the year are going to be stressful, and he’s already a bit of an anxiety-producing quarterback as it is.
Darnold threw 14 interceptions during the regular season and put the football on the ground another 11 times, losing six of those fumbles. His 20 total turnovers across Seattle’s 14-3 run marked the most by any quarterback in the league this year.
He played a clean game in a blowout win over the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round of the playoffs, which was Seattle’s postseason opener after earning the No. 1 seed in the NFC and a bye through Wild Card Weekend. Darnold fumbled once against the Rams, but the Seahawks recovered the football and maintained possession.
Worse injury news struck the team on Wednesday, as rookie safety Nick Emmanwori sustained an ankle injury during practice.
“Safety Nick Emmanwori was limited in practice on Wednesday with an ankle injury that he suffered during practice,” according to the Seahawks’ pool report, which NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport shared on social media. “The rookie safety injured his ankle while defending a pass late in practice. He walked off the field on his own shortly before 4 p.m. Several players and coaches went over to comfort him before he left.”
“He had an ankle today, we brought him in to look at it, and we’ll kind of go from here and figure out what are the next steps,” Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald said, per the report.
Seattle selected Emmanwori out of South Carolina early in the second round of the 2025 draft (No. 35 overall). He played 735 snaps for the Seahawks as a rookie starter, finishing the campaign with the No. 22 ranking out of 98 safeties league-wide who saw enough snaps to qualify at the position, per Pro Football Focus.
