In a viral TikTok video, a pup who thought he’d never find a home finally gets adopted by a couple, and internet users can’t cope with the heartwarming footage.
The clip shared on Wednesday under the username @honorfogle, shows the pit bull glancing at the poster, who is petting him while in his kennel, and then turning his face around, as if he knows she’s going to leave.
“Thanks for visiting me at the shelter, have a great life!” reads layover text in the clip, as the poster keeps playing with the sad pup.
But the poster and her partner don’t leave without him, instead they adopt him and take him home. The following shot shows the pup skipping on his leash as he finally steps into his new forever home.
“He’s been through it all… but today he gets a HOME,” the caption says.
Last year, almost 4 million homeless dogs entered shelters across the country, and only about 2 million were adopted. Some breeds have a smaller chance of getting adopted than others, and that includes pit bulls.
Pit bulls are more likely than any other breed to end up in shelters, and they are also euthanized at the highest rates, according to Rescue Dog Home.
Although pit bulls account for roughly 33 percent of shelter dog intakes, only about 1 in 600 ever finds a permanent home. For many, the outcome is bleak. It’s estimated that around 75 percent of municipal shelters euthanize pit bulls immediately upon arrival.
A study by Arizona State University, published in PLOS ONE, revealed that dogs labeled as pit bulls in shelters are three times less likely to be adopted than other dogs, due to public fear and stigma. However, when breed labels were removed, adoption rates improved dramatically.
The video quickly went viral on TikTok and it has so far received over 836,500 views and 143,100 likes on the platform.
One user, Jay, commented: “Poor baby he looked so broken. Thankyou so much.”
Sophie Valentina said: “His little tail under the cage.”
Ads added: “And now I’m crying.”
