A Spirit Airlines pilot has delivered an emotional farewell message to passengers after the troubled budget carrier abruptly canceled all flights and shut down with immediate effect, bringing an unexpected end to decades in service.
In an onboard announcement, the pilot told passengers: “We’re going to be ceasing operations at 3 a.m. Eastern time today.”
His voice breaking, he continued: “Made a lot of friends along the way, had some great conversations with some of you over the 14 years. Had some not so great conversations occasionally, a lot of crazy stuff has happened but it’s funny as we sit here, I’ll speak for myself, I don’t remember any of the bad times just the good ones.”
Newsweek contacted Spirit via email on Sunday for comment.
The End of an Era
As reported by Newsweek, Spirit entered bankruptcy and has now ceased operations, leading to thousands of flight cancellations and tens of thousands of passengers having their travel plans disrupted. The budget carrier, which had been operating since 1992, confirmed it has begun an immediate “orderly wind-down of operations,” canceling all flights and advising customers not to head to the airport.
In a separate video posted on YouTube and shared by NBC News, a Spirit pilot arriving in Dallas made another emotional announcement after the shutdown was confirmed.
His voice tearful, he said: “Spirit, believe it or not started flying in 1983, I think it was called charter air at the time and in 1992 changed its name to Spirit. So we’ve been in the air since 1983, what is that, 43 years and unfortunately that’s over. So thank you for your support over the years and onward and upward, right? God bless you all.”
Unexpected Farewell for Retiring Captain
Separately, a video posted on Instagram highlighted how the collapse disrupted what was meant to be a retirement flight for Captain Jon Jackson.
Instead of completing his final Spirit journey, Jackson ended up traveling home as a passenger on a Southwest Airlines flight alongside his son, Chris, a first officer.
After Chris informed the cockpit crew of the situation, staff coordinated an impromptu tribute. On landing in Baltimore, the aircraft was met with a water cannon salute from Baltimore Airport Fire & Rescue, while ground staff greeted Jackson with cheers and a bottle of wine, turning an unexpected final journey into a formal farewell.
The Collapse of Spirit Airlines
The shutdown of Spirit Airlines marks one of the most significant failures in U.S. budget aviation in decades, ending a carrier that helped reshape domestic travel through ultra-low fares and high-volume routes.
Spirit had been under sustained financial pressure since the COVID-19 pandemic, with repeated restructuring efforts and two bankruptcy proceedings failing to stabilize its operations. Despite cost-cutting measures and attempts to renegotiate debt, its financial position continued to weaken in a volatile aviation market defined by rising costs and fluctuating demand.
As reported by Newsweek, the airline’s finances were further strained by surging jet fuel prices linked to the war in Iran and a second bankruptcy filing in less than a year. The increase in costs pushed up operating expenses across the industry, but hit low-cost carriers particularly hard, given their reliance on tight margins and high passenger volumes.
Spirit president and CEO Dave Davis said: “the sudden and sustained rise in fuel prices in recent weeks ultimately has left us with no alternative but to pursue an orderly wind-down of the company.”
The airline had been in talks with the U.S. government over a potential rescue deal, but efforts to secure financial support ultimately failed.
Spirit confirmed the wind-down early Saturday, canceling all remaining flights and halting customer service operations. Passengers were instructed not to travel to airports as services ceased immediately.
“To our guests: all flights have been canceled, and customer service is no longer available,” the company said in a statement.
In a separate statement, as reported by NBC News, Davis added: “Sustaining the business required hundreds of millions of additional dollars of liquidity that Spirit simply does not have and could not procure.”
Staff Tributes to the Airline
Staff paid tribute to the airline on social media, as reported by NBC News.
Pilot Jason Smith posted on Instagram: “Here’s to 19+ years, lifelong friends made and the best job this guy ever had.”
Flight attendant Temptest Nicole wrote: “This isn’t the ending I imagined, but it’s a chapter I’ll always be proud of.”
Another staff member posted: “I don’t typically share my day job for privacy reasons but for the past 5 years I’ve been working for Spirit Airlines and that ended overnight. I loved my job. Please keep me, my thousands of colleagues, and the many travelers who will hurt from this loss in your thoughts.”
