Spirit Airlines has entered bankruptcy, meaning thousands of flights have been canceled and tens of thousands of passengers no longer have their scheduled travel plans. But what rights do they have?

The budget carrier, which had been operating since 1992, confirmed it has begun an immediate and “orderly wind-down of operations,” canceling all flights and advising customers not to head to the airport, meaning travelers from today with booked services will need to make alternative arrangements.

What Are Your Rights?

Under U.S. rules, passengers are entitled to a refund if their flight is canceled and they choose not to travel. The Department of Transportation states that this right applies regardless of the reason for the cancelation.

Airlines must also inform passengers of both the cancelation and their eligibility for a refund. In this case, Spirit has said it will automatically process refunds for tickets purchased directly using a credit or debit card.

The airline said on a website dedicated to the shutdown: “While we are not able to help rebook your flight on another airline, we will automatically process refunds for any flights purchased through Spirit with a credit or debit card to the original form of payment.”

Passengers who booked through third parties are being directed to contact those providers directly. Meanwhile, those who paid using vouchers, credits, or loyalty points may face delays, as refunds for these “will be determined at a later date through the bankruptcy court process.”

What Do You If Your Flight Is Canceled?

Spirit has said it cannot assist passengers in securing alternative flights. That leaves travelers responsible for arranging their own onward journeys if they still plan to travel, and may need to purchase new tickets with other airlines.

Can You Request Compensation?

While refunds are expected, additional compensation is unlikely under current U.S. law.

The Department of Transportation makes clear that airlines are not required to compensate passengers for inconvenience, delays, or disruption caused by cancelations. Although travelers can reclaim the cost of their ticket if they do not fly, there is generally no entitlement to extra payments when an airline ceases operations.

At present, the airline has not outlined any compensation scheme beyond refunds, and its website does not mention compensation claims.

“Spirit is unfortunately not able to reimburse guests for incidental travel costs associated with canceled trips,” the website reads. “If you purchased travel insurance, check with your carrier to see if these expenses may be covered under your plan.”

The Reasons Behind The Failure

The decision to enter bankruptcy follows mounting financial strain, including rising fuel costs and a failed restructuring effort. The low-cost airline said in a website dedicated to the shutdown: “It is with great disappointment that on May 2, 2026, Spirit Airlines started an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately,” adding that “all flights have been canceled, and customer service is no longer available.”

“For more than 30 years, Spirit Airlines has played a pioneering role in making travel more accessible,” said president and CEO Dave Davis, adding that recent increases in fuel prices left the company with “no alternative” but to halt operations permanently.

The sudden shutdown marks the end of an airline that positioned itself as a low-cost disruptor in the U.S. travel market. “This is tremendously disappointing and not the outcome any of us wanted,” Davis said, thanking employees and partners for their efforts during the company’s restructuring attempts.

Despite efforts to secure additional funding, Davis said the airline “simply does not have and could not procure” the liquidity needed to continue operating.
