After a weekend of deadly storms that claimed at least 25 lives, millions more are now in the path of potentially destructive weather.

Forecasters are urging people across the Plains and Midwest to prepare as the next round of severe storms takes aim.

The forecasts follow a wave of violent storms that left a deadly trail across parts of the U.S. over the weekend, resulting in at least 25 fatalities, according to CNN.

Kentucky accounted for 18 of those deaths. In neighboring Missouri, Reuters reported multiple fatalities and damage to at least 5,000 properties.

Storms have also carved through parts of Kansas, spawning tornadoes and levelling structures.

“Severe thunderstorms capable of all severe hazards remain possible this evening across portions of the central and southern Plains,” a forecast from the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center (SPC) said.

“Several strong to intense tornadoes are possible,” it added.

A significant severe probability was forecast for Kansas, with larger population centers in this risk area including Wichita, Salina, Hutchinson, and Dodge City. Enid, Oklahoma also fell under this category.

A 15 percent risk area, encompassing some 228,000 was centered primarily around central Kansas and a section of northern Oklahoma, with a surrounding, lower risk area extending across parts of Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, and up into Nebraska, affecting more than 12 million people, according to the SPC.

NWS Tulsa, Oklahoma, said on X, Monday: “Review your severe wx action plans and stay wx aware today. Storms start forming during the midday hours just to our west and spread into area during the afternoon, packing high-impact severe potential. This includes very large hail and strong tornadoes.”

NWS Wichita, Kansas said on X: “[11:31pm Sunday] – Confirmed large tornado is moving into western Reno County. People in the towns of Turon, Sylvia, Langdon and Plevna need to be taking shelter immediately. This is a dangerous situation.”

The National Weather Service said in an update: “Continue to monitor forecasts for the latest information and updates to the risk areas. Be prepared to take action if watches and warnings are issued for your area.

What Happens Next

Severe weather is forecast to stretch from southeastern Iowa and central Illinois down to northeastern Texas on Tuesday, according to AccuWeather. By Tuesday night, the threat will extend eastward into Virginia and the western Carolinas.

Forecasters warn of widespread damaging winds, large hail, and multiple tornadoes.
