President Donald Trump said there is “not much of a connection” between the missing or deceased scientists and workers with ties to advanced research, whose cases have fueled claims of a possible link.
Weeks of reports and online speculation had raised questions about a possible connection among a series of deaths and disappearances dating back several years, capturing the attention of the public, lawmakers, and federal agencies.
Trump further elevated the focus when, earlier this month he described the incidents as “pretty serious stuff,” saying that he hoped it was coincidence but that “some of them were very important people.”
These remarks came a day after White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt indicated the administration would investigate the cases.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Trump said he’d been briefed on whether the cases were connected. “We have a lot of scientists so when you put together 10, it’s a lot but a very small number compared to—we have a lot of scientists… thousands, hundreds of thousands of scientists.
“Some of them that we looked at are very sad cases, in some cases, some were sick, some left this earth self-inflicted. Some had other things.”
He added: “So far, we’re finding that there’s not much of a connection. We’ll let you know. We’re going to be doing a full report.”
This is a developing story. More to follow.
