Two Chicago police officers were shot Saturday morning inside a North Side hospital, prompting a major emergency response and an active investigation, WGN reported citing multiple police sources.

The shooting happened at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital in the 5100 block of North California Avenue in the Lincoln Square neighborhood. Sources tell WGN‑TV the incident involved a prisoner who was at the hospital when gunfire erupted.

One officer was reported to be in critical condition, while the condition of the second officer has not yet been confirmed, according to WGN.

Details about what led to the shooting remain unclear, and authorities have not said whether the suspected shooter is in custody.

A heavy police presence remains around the hospital as investigators work to piece together what happened, WGN reported.
