When the Ohio State Buckeyes host the Texas Longhorns this weekend in Columbus, all eyes will be on Arch Manning to see if he lives up to the hype. At the same time, Ohio State will be debuting a new quarterback in Julian Sayin.
On August 18, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day announced that Sayin won the starting quarterback job in a close competition against junior Lincoln Kienholz.
Ahead of the clash against the Longhorns, former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer appeared on the “Joel Klatt Show” and was asked what advice he’d give the young quarterback heading into his first major test.
“I hate to say it like this because you never want your quarterback playing like this; he can’t screw it up,” Meyer said. “I’m sure they got excellent coaches, and Ryan’s an expert quarterback coach. You give them so many easy throws. You don’t need to win this game, Julian.

“You do not have to do that. You have enough cats around you. So you’re going to see a bunch of screens, I would imagine, to Jeremiah [Smith] and that crew. You’re going to see a strong run game. You’re going to see easy throws.”
Moreover, Meyer went into detail about how he handled scenarios during his coaching career where he had a young quarterback going into a big-time game.

“I would always tell these young quarterbacks, give us two first downs and your job is accomplished,” Meyer added. “That’s all you got to do.
“And young quarterbacks, the way the mind works is, especially the older guys, you can say whatever you want to, but the young player, especially that position, you start saying things to them that is a little bit too much to grasp they start to shut down a little bit, get panicky.”
Sayin, the nation’s No. 9 recruit and top California prospect in 2024, signed with Alabama before transferring to Ohio State following Nick Saban’s retirement. Now, he’s the starter for the Buckeyes and has the opportunity to introduce himself to the nation with a stellar performance.
