As pitchers and catchers arrived for the first official spring training workout this week, the Chicago White Sox brought a new pitcher into the mix.
According to the official Major League Baseball transactions log, the White Sox signed 32-year-old right-hander Erick Fedde to a one-year, $1.5 million contract on Tuesday. Fedde spent the 2025 season bouncing around from team to team, playing for the St. Louis Cardinals, Atlanta Braves and Milwaukee Brewers.
The Braves released Fedde less than a month after acquiring the veteran hurler in a trade with the Cardinals, who later joined the Brewers. Fedde struggled in his five appearances in Atlanta, posting an 8.10 ERA, but turned things around in Milwaukee, posting a 3.38 ERA and 1.125 WHIP in seven appearances, but was left off the team’s postseason roster.
Chicago’s starting rotation will likely be anchored by Shane Smith, Davis Martin and Anthony Kay next season, with Fedde set to compete for a spot in the rotation with Sean Burke and other options like Sean Newcomb and Mike Vasil.
Fedde is no stranger to the White Sox, spending time with the team during the 2024 season. The 32-year-old enjoyed arguably the most successful stint in his career in his 21 starts in Chicago, posting a 4.6 WAR, and is sure to be on the inside track to round out the White Sox’s starting rotation next season.
Chicago has needed pitching depth, especially with Ky Bush continuing to work his way back from Tommy John surgery. Reuniting with Fedde is a low-risk move for the White Sox that could have plenty of upside if the right-handed pitcher plays as he did during his last stint in Chicago.
