The New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox in Game 3 of their wild card matchup, with rookie pitcher — and Massachusetts native — Cam Schlittler throwing a gem to lead the Yankees.
Schlittler threw eight scoreless innings with 12 strikeouts to end the Red Sox’s season. After the game, he talked about how he was happy the Red Sox season was over. He also noted that he felt the start was personal for him, facing the team he grew up rooting for.
After the game, Schlittler sent out a post on X reading, “Drinking dat dirty water.” The post was an ode to the song “Dirty Water” by The Standells. The song is played at Fenway Park after home wins for the Red Sox. A fan replied to the post saying Schlittler was “not from Boston,” which Schlittler did not let slide.
“Went to school in (Boston) for 3 years, I live in Southie during the off season, start preparing for the (Boston Bruins season) homie,” Schlittler wrote on X.
Schlittler made 14 regular-season starts for the Yankees, but his start on Thursday night was the most important of the year. He sent home the Yankees’ rivals in dominant fashion and now figures to play a major role in getting the Yankees past the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Red Sox season is over now, but fans may not soon forget the outing Schlittler had against them. It was clearly a meaningful start for the rookie.
