The New York Yankees have not made too many splashy moves this offseason, but have made some under-the-radar additions to their team.
One of the Yankees’ low-key additions was claiming Kaleb Ort from the Houston Astros off waivers on Jan. 9. Ort made his debut in 2021 for the Boston Red Sox, but has been pitching with the Astros for the last two seasons. However, on Friday, the Yankees designated Ort for assignment after claiming Michael Siani off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Ort will turn 34 in February and is out of options, making it less likely a team claims him. He has thrown 122 1/3 innings over the past five seasons. He has a 5.00 ERA and 126 strikeouts.
In the big leagues last season, he posted a 4.89 ERA in 49 games. In 2024, he pitched in 22 big league games and had a 2.55 ERA in 24 2/3 innings of work. The Yankees could work out a trade for him, but if not, he will be placed on waivers.
If claimed off waivers, he will immediately join a team’s 40-man roster. If he is unclaimed, he can be outrighted if the Yankees do not place him on unconditional release waivers. Ort has not found much success in the big leagues, but is under club control through 2029.
