The New York Yankees have been closely linked to a lot of the top names in free agency this winter, but they haven’t made any blockbuster moves.

They’ve been pursuing Cody Bellinger for the last few months, but ESPN’s Buster Olney reported that the Yankees expect Bellinger to sign elsewhere this winter. As a result, teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets make sense as a fit for the star.

Olney also reported that the Yankees remain in pursuit of Kyle Tucker and Bo Bichette, two superstar free agents that the Yankees have reportedly been pursuing over the last few weeks.

“But barring a shift in the negotiations, it appears his time with the Yankees is over, and they’ll look at other possibilities to augment their roster,” Olney wrote. “The Yankees have remained engaged in the conversations for outfielder Kyle Tucker and infielder Bo Bichette, and as they have haggled in the Bellinger negotiations, they have also engaged other teams about trade possibilities.”

The fact that the Yankees remain in pursuit of Bichette and Tucker means the issue with Bellinger isn’t simply a money issue. It likely means the Yankees have the money to sign Bellinger, but they’re not willing to spend that money on him.

Still, Tucker is a fit if they’re willing to make a big splash. It would likely cost the team twice as much money to sign Tucker as it would to sign Bellinger.

Bichette is expected to sign for a similar value as Bellinger, but he plays a more premium position. As a result, it would make more sense for the Yankees to go after Bichette.
