The mother of New York mayor Zohran Mamdani, filmmaker Mira Nair, attended a party hosted by convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell, according to the just-released trove of documents linked to deceased serial abuser Jeffrey Epstein.
Nair’s name was on an email sent by publicist Peggy Siegal to the late pedophile Epstein about an afterparty in 2009 for the film Amelia, which Nair had directed. The email alleges no wrongdoing and simply records attendance.
Why It Matters
The Department of Justice published on Friday over 3 million pages under the Epstein Files Transparency Act that was signed into law by President Donald Trump on November 19, 2025.
The tranche of documents includes 2,000 videos and 180,000 images making the total production nearly 3.5 million pages released, in compliance with the act.
The appearance of Nair’s name does not suggest any wrongdoing but does show the scope of celebrities named in the documents.
What To Know
Epstein died in jail in New York in August 2019 awaiting trial on federal charges. The Justice Department’s latest document release on Friday show the range of contacts in business, politics and entertainment of Epstein and his former associate, Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year sentence after being convicted of child sex trafficking.
Nair’s name was among those mentioned in papers released Friday.
The email sent by publicist Peggy Siegal to Epstein on October 21, 2009 describes how she had left Maxwell’s townhouse following an after-party for a film.
The email said that former U.S. president Bill Clinton and Amazon found Jeff Bezos attended as was director Mira Nair, whose son, Zohran Mamdani, a Democrat, is New York City mayor.
The email does not allege wrongdoing and only records attendance at the event.
Nair directed Amelia, released in 2009 and starring Hilary Swank as aviator Amelia Earhart and Richard Gere as her husband, the publisher George Putnam.
The email said the film got a “tepid reaction” but women liked it a lot more. “Hillary Swank and [Richard] Gere are at stupid party in Bloomingdales cheap sportswear department…very weird,” the email said.
“Studio went for free party from store and windows for a month…. Going to be in Wall Street 2 tomorrow ….more to come. xoxo Peg,” the email added.
What People Are Saying
The publicist Peggy Siegal, in an email from October 21, 2009: “Just left Ghislaine’s townhouse…after party for film. Bill Clinton and Jeff Bezos were there…Jean Pigozzi, director Mira Nair…etc”
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche told reporters the release of the papers “marks the end of a very comprehensive document identification and review process to ensure transparency to the American people and compliance.”
What Happens Next
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said Friday’s document drop was the end of a comprehensive identification and review process, suggesting that the US justice department had almost finished its job under the Epstein Files Transparency Act.
However, Democrats argue that the department has withheld up to two-and-a-half million pages without proper justification.
Democratic Representative Ro Khanna, who led the Epstein Files Transparency Act with GOP Rep. Thomas Massie, said there are questions over why the rest are being withheld, which he would examine.
