A 12-year-old boy stole his parents’ car to drive to his old school — leading police on a chase reaching 70 miles per hour before he crashed into a patrol car, according to cops.
The unidentified preteen was busted in Sacramento around 7 a.m. Monday after a “short” but terrifying joy ride, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.
He allegedly took his parents’ Ford SUV to drive to his former school, deputies said, without detailing why he so wanted to go there or how long ago he had been a pupil.
The tween joyrider then “ran over some traffic cones and left” the school area — refusing to stop when deputies arrived.
He sped away, leading cops in a chase that reached 70 mph, sheriff’s office spokesperson Sergeant Amar Gandhi told the Los Angeles Times.
The young driver then “struck a parked car and one of our patrol units,”the sheriff’s office said — with a photo showing it smashed in at the front, surrounded by squad cars.
“Thankfully, no one was injured,” the sheriff’s office said.
The kid was taken to the Sacramento County Juvenile Hall and is facing serious crimes, including hit and run, assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, reckless evasion of a peace officer, vehicle theft and receiving a stolen vehicle, the LA Times reported.
The boy’s parents won’t be charged, as California law states that 12 is the youngest age a minor charged with a crime in criminal court. However, they may be financially responsible for the damages he caused if they’re hit with a civil suit, the report stressed.
