A 20-year-old man has been killed in a hit-and-run south of Brisbane overnight, with police seizing a vehicle but still working to identify the driver.
The young man was struck while walking with a group of friends along Middle Road, in Greenbank, about 30 kilometres south of the Brisbane CBD, shortly before 9pm on Monday.
Detective Inspector Ian Galpin said the 20-year-old’s friends immediately gave him first aid until emergency services arrived.
The young man could not be saved, and was declared dead at the scene.
A spokesperson for the Queensland Ambulance Service said no one else was at the scene when emergency services arrived.
Police arriving at Middle Road were unable to find the vehicle that hit the man, but did find a black Ford Falcon without registration plates and damage to its front bumper.
“This vehicle is now the subject of a forensic examination,” he said.
Police also flagged two other vehicles seen in the area near the time of the crash, a white Toyota Land Cruiser and a “dark-coloured utility”.
Officers were looking for the drivers of those vehicles, and any occupants who could assist officers with information.
Galpin would not be drawn on whether officers believed the crash was linked to hooning, and could not say why the 20-year-old was on the road at the time of the crash.
He said police spoke to people at the scene who they suspected had been in the Ford Falcon, and who had “provided versions” of what occurred before the 20-year-old died.
Police also spoke to the young man’s family, and other people who arrived at the scene on Monday after the 20-year-old was hit.
Anyone with images or videos of the crash, including CCTV, dashcam, or phone footage, was urged to contact police.
“We believe that there are people with information that could assist this investigation,” Galpin said.
“In my experience, providing this information sooner than later will make a significant difference.”
On Tuesday afternoon, no charges had been laid, and no one had been taken into custody.
