Ohio State quarterback Will Howard doesn’t stack up among the top signal-callers in this draft class. But to former head coach Jon Gruden, Howard is similar to a former first rounder and one of the current bests to play the position in the NFL.
Gruden, released the first episode of his series “QB Class,” and he heaped high praise on Howard, comparing him to the reigning NFL MVP, Bills’ Josh Allen.
“You’re a big, dual-threat quarterback, aren’t you?” Gruden said to Howard. “That’s the MVP of the league. He’s a real big dual threat.”
Howard checked in at 6-foot-4 and 236 pounds at the NFL Scouting Combine and finished his college career with 26 rushing touchdowns, so Gruden saw the parallels of him to Allen’s size and running ability.
“How the hell do people not like you as the No. 1 quarterback in the draft?” Gruden added. “You’re like a young Josh Allen.”
Allen was selected with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft, while Howard projects to be taken somewhere in the middle rounds.
Howard does have the size and the athleticism. But Allen’s arm strength is out of this world and Howard does not come close to him in this category.
Even though he might not be on the same level Allen, Howard would still be a good addition for a quarterback-needy team, as he has the desired traits and champion mentality to be a starter down the road.
