A woman’s airport security mistake meant her perfume bottle was taken from her, but a helpful staff member offered a solution.
Simone Archer, 33, who is from Jamaica and lives in Los Angeles, was traveling to Morocco for a friend’s wedding. During a layover in Paris, the incident happened.
“I was going through airport security when the agents stopped me because of my perfume,” she told Newsweek. “It was the Louis Vuitton L’Immensite, and the bottle was the 200 ml, 6.8 fluid ounces.
“There was only a tiny amount of liquid left in the bottle, so I thought it would be fine. And I also got through American security with it, so I didn’t think it was a problem.”
The perfume in question can cost upward of $300, according to Louis Vuitton’s website.
Newsweek contacted Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport for comment by email.
The airport’s security rules say carry-on luggage can only have liquids in a container no more than 100 ml. In the video, an airport security staff member can be seen pouring the perfume from its original bottle into a smaller bottle so it could be taken through by the passenger.
“Security in Paris wouldn’t let me take my LIV perfume,” she wrote in the video’s text overlay. She added in the caption: “I made him pour it into a smaller bottle! I paid too much for that sir,” along with a series of laughing face emojis.
After her bottle was taken, Archer asked if the security staff could pour the perfume from the larger bottle into a smaller container, but they refused. However, she was “very persistent.”
“They said the bottle exceeded the liquid limit for carry-on luggage, which was surprising since I’d flown with it before without any issues,” she told Newsweek. “My reaction was mostly begging.
“At this point, they started laughing at me, but I think he kind of felt sorry for me too. I only travel with carry-ons when traveling internationally, so I had no other perfume and didn’t want to buy more.
“I think he just felt bad for me and found a pair of confiscated scissors and kind of popped it open the top and poured it into a smaller container I had. I was so grateful I hugged him after. I was kind of sad I couldn’t keep the bottle because they’re refillable and at a little bit of a discount.
“But I was just happy I got to keep the perfume and make my transfer flight,” Archer said.
TikTok users took to the comments section of the video to share their reactions. “He a real one for even doing that for you, most others would just chuck it and say too bad,” said Lauryn Mapusua.
Tim Holmes commented: “But they did decant it for you – this would not have happened elsewhere. Hope you were profusely grateful,” to which Archer replied that she “hugged him and everything.”
“I lost my Chanel today,” wrote Lorin Paige.
Meanwhile, Tea Seller said: “I almost lost my YSL Y and Micheal Malule. But the guy was nice he just placed them in a zip-lock clear bag and told me to put them in my check-in bag next time. Damn. I would have cried.”
