Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo officially announced his bid to become New York City’s next mayor on Saturday, posting a video to X, formerly Twitter.

Cuomo’s announcement was not a big surprise, as the former Democratic governor had been teasing the decision for sometime. “Our city is in crisis. That’s why I am running to be Mayor of New York City. We need government to work. We need effective leadership,” he wrote in the X post, which included a more than 17-minute long video.

A recent poll by Honan Strategy Group for Tusk Strategies, which surveyed 1,214 likely Democratic voters from February 22 to 23, showed Cuomo as the leading contender in the race.

The former governor had the support of 38 percent of respondents, compared to current Mayor Eric Adams’ 10 percent. In second place was New York State Assembly member Zohran Mamdani at 12 percent.

This is a developing story and will be updated with additional information.
