A golden retriever’s unexpected new habit has melted hearts across the internet.
A dog mom, who goes by the social media handle @rileytuckergoldenboy, recently shared a heartwarming moment with her golden retriever, Riley. She came home to find Riley holding Seuss-Isms!, a picture book based on the wisdom and lessons of Dr. Seuss. This charming moment resonated with viewers, garnering 141,400 likes and 1 million views on TikTok.
The video shows the pair reading the book together, with the golden retriever displaying the utmost concentration as his owner narrates the story.
“#Rileyreads was by far the most exciting thing to share with you all,” the caption read.
Encouraged by recommendations, the TikToker decided to order Go, Dog. Go! and captured Riley’s excitement while unboxing the new book.
Go, Dog. Go! is a beloved children’s book by P.D. Eastman. The story follows a variety of dogs engaging in different activities, from driving cars to attending a dog party in a treetop. Its simple yet engaging format has made it a staple in early literacy programs.
“Last time was the first time he brought me a book. But he’s probably very used to me reading, since I did teach online during the pandemic. I am still a teacher, he definitely knows that books are our relaxing time. And I guess he likes the sound of my voice,” the owner explained.
Riley maintained the same level of focus while listening to the new book, further endearing him to viewers.
Reading to dogs is not just an adorable pastime—it has proven benefits. Studies have shown that therapy dogs can help children build confidence in reading by providing a non-judgmental and comforting presence. Programs hosted by the American Kennel Club have highlighted the positive impact that reading to dogs can have on literacy skills and emotional well-being.
TikTokers were quick to share their thoughts and speculations about Riley’s unique habit.
“He didn’t know you were reading to kids online, he thought you were always reading to him. He misses it,” said Kelley Sue.
“Have you always had Riley?!? If not, it’s possible he was a ‘reading pal’ for schools and libraries. If you have had him since the beginning… maybe you should make him a reading pal for kids!” suggested another user.
The dog mom responded: “I’ve had him since he was 8 weeks. I’ve actually brought him to our summer library program before too!”
“Oh my gosh. my jaw dropped. how incredibly beautiful,” said Christine Duval.
“That is not a golden retriever, that is a toddler in a furry suit. How precious. I LOVE Goldens. We have 2,” another user commented.
