Nationals Leader David Littleproud has accused Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of “crawling” into the debate to recognise Palestine, after Albanese held a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron overnight.

The Albanese government is sending increasingly strong signals of an intention to recognise Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly in New York next month, in a potential move that would follow France, Canada and the United Kingdom.

Albanese spoke with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday, which followed a conversation with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday, in which the pair discussed the upcoming general assembly.

“I think it’s pretty obvious that the prime minister is crawling into this any way he possibly can,” said Littleproud when asked if Albanese’s call with Macron suggested that Australian recognition of Palestine was imminent.

“Let’s be careful about dictating the moral compass across just the Israeli people, it’s the Hamas terrorist organisation that is much of the problem in terms of this conflict, and there needs to be a way through that with Hamas being eliminated, handing over their weapons and handing over their hostages as the first principle.”
