Despite losing Game 7 of the World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Toronto Blue Jays look better than ever after a busy offseason.
Though the Blue Jays were viewed as American League contenders heading into last season, the team shattered all expectations and nearly won the World Series, but fell short to the overpowered Dodgers. Though Toronto lost in the end, its postseason run has opened doors for the franchise this offseason.
The Blue Jays were viewed as a top destination for nearly every top free agent this offseason, and they capitalized on their momentum, bringing in stars like Dylan Cease and Kazuma Okamoto. Toronto further bolstered its roster by signing Cody Ponce and Tyler Rogers.
After such a successful and electric offseason, The Athletic’s Patrick Mooney, Katie Woo and Will Sammon labeled the Blue Jays as the “biggest winners” of the offseason.
“After pushing the Dodgers to the 11th inning of a World Series Game 7, the Blue Jays capitalized on all that postseason revenue and this newfound momentum,” Mooney, Woo, and Sammon wrote on Tuesday. “Following years of being used by free agents for leverage and failing to close deals for top players, the Blue Jays were able to showcase Toronto’s electric environment throughout the playoffs and lure in elite talent.”
It feels like the energy has shifted with the Blue Jays after the World Series. The ownership is willing to back the team, which now boasts the fifth-most expensive payroll in the league, and just as important, top players are expressing the desire to play in Toronto. Now, the Blue Jays will be looking to replicate their 2025 success after being one of the biggest offseason winners.
