Heavy rain is expected to continue over the weekend and into next week in Sydney, adding to a wet May.

Friday and Sunday will be the days of heaviest rainfall to end this week – with the low-pressure system developing offshore also raising the possibility of thunderstorms – before a true deluge is forecast to begin Monday.

“Sunday night is when we expect to see a notable uptick in the amount of wet weather across Sydney that leads us into early next week as well,” the Bureau of Meteorology’s Angus Hines said.

“And then Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, next week, we see quite an interesting weather system set up across eastern parts of the country … that will deliver some reasonably significant rainfall totals, or certainly some moderate to heavy rainfall totals across northern parts of the state.”

Hines said it was likely that Sydney would escape the worst of the rain – which is centred on the north coast – but it could still be “quite wet through the first half of next week”.

Weatherzone meteorologist James Rout said the wind speeds on Sunday would be on par with a southerly buster.

“We’re not looking at the temperature drop for a southerly buster, but we are looking at the same southerly wind [gusts] hitting 60-70km/h at its peak on Sunday,” Rout said.

These conditions may quell any plans for coastal activities on the weekend, as rough seas are likely to be hazardous for rock fishers and surfers.
