Aldi has beaten out Coles and Woolworths in a comparison for having the cheapest home-brand staples, according to testing from consumer group Choice.

As part of its ongoing quarterly surveys of nationwide supermarket prices, Choice’s latest comparison exercise tracked the cost of a basket comprising home-brand versions of cream cheese, thickened cream, puff pastry, frozen mixed berries, tomato paste, spaghetti, tomato sauce and soy milk.

The total cost of the basket was cheapest at Aldi stores, at $20.08, followed by Coles at $21.30, Woolworths at $21.40, and IGA at $23.89, according to the survey that was conducted across 104 individual supermarkets in 27 locations across Australia in June.

Choice also studied the freshness of strawberries from the four supermarkets, with surveyors assessing the state of the berries on day one and again on day five while storing them in their original punnets in a fridge’s crisper drawer.

Coles’ strawberries were deemed the freshest, with 100 per cent of punnets showing no signs of decay on day one and 58 per cent showing no signs of decay by day five. In contrast, 50 per cent of punnets purchased from IGA showed no signs of decay after one day, while just 25 per cent showed no signs of decay after five days.
