Adding to the Committee to Protect Journalists report, which stated four journalists have been injured by less lethal rounds fired by police while covering violent clashes in Los Angeles, two more journalists – both with the ABC – are reported to have been impacted.

An ABC camera operator filming a group of protesters in the neighbourhood of Little Tokyo was injured when police opened fire at a group of people pushing a bin towards officers.

The cameraman was hit in the chest with a rubber or foam projectile. He was wearing a Kevlar vest and was not seriously injured, however he reported the pain as like being “punched in the chest”, ABC reports.

The ABC’s North America correspondent Lauren Day was also caught up in tear gas.

“I felt the unmistakable burn of tear gas – first in my eyes, then in my nose, lips and throat,” she said.

Other journalists injured include Nine News US correspondent Lauren Tomasi, who was shot with a rubber bullet while reporting live; British freelance photojournalist Nick Stern, who required emergency surgery after being hit with a plastic bullet; and Los Angeles Daily News crime reporter Ryanne Mena and freelance reporter and videographer Sean Beckner-Carmitchel, who were hit with pepper balls and tear-gassed.
