Opposition Leader Peter Dutton says he is confident he can defeat a first-term Labor government, and denies the Coalition is wilting under pressure and attention.
Yesterday, this masthead reported Dutton defended Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor against public and internal criticism of the opposition’s economic performance.

Asked if leaks were causing the Coalition to wilt under pressure, Dutton disagreed, and said he was confident his party could beat Labor.
“When you look at where we are as an opposition, we are in the most significant position that a [first-term] opposition has been in since 1931. We’re on the cusp of bringing to an end a bad first-term government,” Dutton said.

“We have a sense of unity, as people have seen over the course over the last two-and-a-half years, and not every day is going to be a perfect day in opposition, I can promise you. But what we’ve done is held the government to account, we’ve put forward an energy policy which is going to underpin the strength of our economy.
“The Liberal Coalition government will always invest more wisely or manage the economy more successfully, and that’s the formula to help Australian families live safely and prosperously, and that’s what we will deliver now. To defeat a first term government is a tough task … but we have put forward a plan.”
Dutton reiterated his party would outline its own budget plan on Thursday night. It would be “a stark difference between an Albanese Bandt Labor Greens government”, he said.
