The St. Louis Cardinals are entering the rebuild they should have entered a few years ago. The front office has held onto the veterans on the roster, hoping they could turn the team around and win meaningful games. Unfortunately for St. Louis, this hasn’t been the case and it’s now set to rebuild.
Most experts believe the Cardinals will take a traditional approach to their rebuild, opting to trade their veterans and bring in a new crop of prospects.
Josh Jacobs of Redbird Rants recently proposed a blockbuster trade with the New York Yankees that would move multiple stars, including Yankees rookie pitcher Luis Gil to the Cardinals.
Here’s the blockbuster deal that Jacobs proposed:
- St. Louis Cardinals receive: RHP Luis Gil, RHP Chase Hampton, OF Brando Mayea
- New York Yankees receive: UTL Brendan Donovan, RHP Ryan Helsley
“The combination of Gil, Hampton, and Mayea may be enough to convince the Cardinals to let go of their two highly prized assets,” Jacobs wrote.
It’s unlikely the Yankees would be willing to part ways with Luis Gil in this deal, even if they’re adding two talented players in return. New York’s pitching pipeline is far too shallow at the top for them to be willing to move their best young starting pitcher without receiving one in return.
From a value standpoint, this deal could make sense, but unless New York adds another starter or two in free agency, it won’t agree to move Gil.
As for St. Louis, it’s much more likely it takes a traditional approach of dumping players like Helsley to contenders for massive prospect hauls rather than trying to bring in established big leaguers.
