A Melbourne paint manufacturer is facing criminal charges after a worker was killed in a workshop explosion.

In 2023, a Dandenong South workshop engulfed by fire claimed the life of a 57-year-old man, and seriously injured two others after flammable liquid ignited.

The man’s body was recovered from the wreck of the building two days after he went missing in the blaze.

A 62-year-old from Eaglemont and a 44-year-old from Port Melbourne were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Two firefighters, a male in his 30s and a male in his 40s, also received burns to the upper body and were taken to hospital with minor injuries when there was an explosion inside the Superior Drive factory as they were battling the blaze.

More than 120 firefighters and more than 40 vehicles were called to the scene to fight the fire.

WorkSafe Victoria said on Friday the company, Indoc Pty Ltd, was facing four charges under occupational health and safety legislation for “failing to provide or maintain, so far as was reasonably practicable, a working environment that was safe and without risks to health”.

“It is alleged the company breached [legislation] by failing to undertake an up-to-date hazardous area assessment and failing to eliminate non-intrinsically safe equipment from where flammable liquid transfer was occurring,” WorkSafe Victoria said.
