Dakota Tom’s Sandwiches, a food wholesaler based in Corsica, South Dakota, has said it is voluntarily recalling a number of its burger products over fears they may have been contaminated with the Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.
The announcement was made on Friday by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on the federal agency’s website. The recalled products are Dakota Tom’s Sandwiches’ pepperjack cheeseburger, bacon cheeseburger, and a burger called ‘The Gambler,’ which had been distributed to retailers in South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and Wyoming.
According to the FDA, the recall comes over concerns about burger patty provided by BrucePac, an outside supplier, which has also recalled its products over fears of Listeria monocytogenes contamination.
Anyone who has purchased the impacted products is urged not to consume them and to return them to the point of purchase for a full refund. The pepper jack cheeseburger has UPC number 737296806008, the pepper jack cheeseburger’s UPC number is 3729680300 and ‘The Gambler’ has UPC number 737296601788. All impacted products have best-before dates ranging from September 1, 2024, to November 23, 2024.
According to the FDA, “Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”
There are no reports of any illnesses thus far related to the recalled products.
Dakota Tom’s Sandwiches has said it is no longer using burger patty from BrucePac’s impacted facility.
Photographs included in the FDA announcement show the packaging of all three products features its product name in large writing, a barcode and the Dakota Tom’s Sandwiches logo which is a man wearing a hat and bandana with a sandwich in one hand.
Any customers with concerns about the recall are advised to call Dakota Tom’s Sandwiches at 605-946-5123. Newsweek contacted Dakota Tom’s Sandwiches for comment via email on Saturday outside of regular office hours.
On Friday the FDA also classified its recall of ice cream sold by Today’s Frozen Desserts, Inc., Miami, as a Class II, after it was discovered to contain undeclared food colorings Yellow 5 (Tartrazine) and Yellow 6 (Sunset Yellow FCF).
A class II recall is issued when a product may cause a temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequence, or where the probability of serious health consequences is remote.
The FDA has also classified the recall of a potato salad product produced by Lemonland Food Corp as a Class I incident, the highest risk category issued in “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”
On October 16, the FDA announced the recall of a number of tablets being sold as dietary supplements, produced by C&A Naturistics, after they were found to contain the drugs dexamethasone, diclofenac and methocarbamol.
