Over the weekend, it seemed everyone had an opinion on the viral sideline exchange between Caitlin Clark and Stephanie White during the Indiana Fever’s loss to the Portland Fire.
One of those voices was basketball icon Cheryl Miller, who suggested that frustration was simply “boiling over” between Clark and White and described Clark as being “too disruptive.”
“Right now, it’s frustration. And unfortunately, it’s boiling over, and it’s being seen,” Miller said on NBC on Sunday. “It’s one thing to have it behind closed doors, but when it spills over, and when the coach has to basically say, ‘You know what Caitlin, enough is enough, this is too disruptive, in and out, take a seat.’”
On Monday, both Clark and White downplayed the incident, explaining that it was simply a competitive moment between two people who share the same goal of winning games and have a strong relationship.
“Two people being competitive, two people that really want to win,” Clark said. “There’s a lot of people out there in the media or on TV that think they know a lot of things and they’re just blatantly wrong. … I ride for Steph. … Steph has my back.”

Later that night, Miller appeared on NBC alongside Sue Bird and softened her previous comments, offering a more supportive message regarding Clark.
“The amount of pressure that is on this young lady … living up to what everyone expects her to be and do can be overwhelming,” Miller said. “I’m going to give her some grace. And she’s right about one thing — I’ve been in situations like that before.”
Clark is the face of the WNBA, whether people like it or not, and this was just another example of that reality. The cameras are always on her, and whether she does something great or controversial, people are going to talk about it — either in support of her or in criticism.
