The Kansas City Chiefs didn’t have the NFL season they envisioned, going 6-11 and missing the postseason for the first time in 11 years. Along with that, the team lost its MVP quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, to one of the most brutal injuries: a season-ending torn ACL and LCL in his left knee in his team’s Week 15 loss.

Mahomes will return after getting through his grueling rehabilitation. However, the focus is now on improving their roster through NFL free agency and trades. The Chiefs have been generating buzz as free agency is likely to take some of their key players away.

The team recently released defensive end Mike Danna and will now need to focus on several other defensive players. In particular, they could lose a safety and possibly a cornerback while teams in need offer them better deals to play on their squad.

Recent predictions from ESPN’s Dan Graziano suggest that Kansas City could see the departure of its 17-game starting safety, Bryan Cook. The 26-year-old recorded 85 tackles last season for the team, and also has vast playoff experience.

Based on Graziano’s details, he currently has a three-year $42 million contract situation with $20 million guaranteed. With that, the Chiefs might not be able to give him the sort of offer he’s looking for as a free agent.

That could mean that Cook ends up heading to an AFC rival in need of his services. Graziano suggests the Houston Texans are a great fit for Cook.

Houston (12-5) reached the playoffs last season and, despite a win in the Wild Card Round, faltered in their follow-up matchup against the Buffalo Bills.

The Texans released veteran safety Jimmy Ward last week, so the idea of Cook joining Houston makes some sense. They’ll likely want to get additional help on defense, and that could occur through free agency, if not the NFL Draft.

As far as the Chiefs go, they’ll have a lot of decisions to make as they look to re-establish themselves as contenders. They’ll have Mahomes back at some point, and based on recent chatter about Travis Kelce, he will be playing another season.

Regarding their defense, Graziano predicts that, despite potentially losing Cook, the Chiefs will look to keep their cornerback Jaylen Watson. He’s on a three-year $50 million contract with $20 million guaranteed.
