China said it is working with the Ukrainians to verify reports that two Chinese citizens were captured fighting for the Russian army inside Ukraine’s Donetsk region.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday that his forces had captured the two Chinese men, and that Kyiv was seeking information from Beijing.
“China is verifying the information with the Ukrainian side,” a spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry told reporters on Wednesday.
“Let me stress that the Chinese government always asks Chinese nationals to stay away from areas of armed conflict, avoid any form of involvement in armed conflict, and in particular avoid participation in any party’s military operations.”
The State Department said it was disturbed by the report and called China a “major enabler” of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
