Chrissy Metz took a significant step in her new relationship during a recent work trip.

After shooting a film in Cape Town, South Africa, the This Is Us alum, 44, traveled to Nigeria to meet her boyfriend’s family. “I really was on an adventure,” Metz shared on the Thursday, April 10, episode of Live With Kelly and Mark. “We went to go visit his family. They are the most beautiful, special, wonderful people.”

When asked by Kelly Ripa what her “Nigerian welcome was like,” Metz said she was greeted with “love, kindness [and] food.” She added, “Some of it’s spicy, a little spicy for me, but I’m obsessed with jollof rice. It’s one of my favorite things. I’ve tried to make it. I’m working on it, but that’s OK.”

Despite her love for Nigerian food, Metz recalled asking her boyfriend’s family if they could “turn down” the spice level for her.

Metz was previously married to Martyn Eaden from 2008 to 2015 and dated Bradley Collins for more than three years before calling it quits in 2023. Earlier this month, she exclusively confirmed to Us Weekly that she’s feeling “very, very good” about her new relationship, which she is choosing to keep private.

“I think that when you keep trying things and expecting different results, that’s called the definition of insanity,” she explained. “And I’m like, yeah, you know what? I think I want to just keep it very private and just enjoy it. And what’s the intention of talking about it and sharing it? I am just being very cautious and careful.”

Metz recently teamed up with Collins to create their second children’s book, When I Talk to God, I Talk About Feelings, which hit bookshelves on Tuesday, April 8. “Any collaborative art is always so hard. Because you’re like, ‘Well, I have this idea,’ and trying to meld it together. I think we did a great job with that,” she told Us of working with her ex. “I think that it’s cool because we both have different, obviously, experiences when we were young. You can lend his experience to my experience.”

She continued, “It was also one of those things where we were transitioning out of our romantic relationship into friendship when we put in our second draft. And it was cool because I was like, ‘Oh, in real-time, we’re assessing our feelings. We’re actually so meta. It’s helping us.’ I think everything happens as it’s supposed to. It was not lost on me. I was like, ‘Oh, OK. What can I glean from this?’”

Metz said that just because Collins didn’t turn out to be her “forever person,” she didn’t have to “kick” him out of her life. “You still want to be respectful and you know that you cared about them at a certain point in a different way,” she said. “I’m that person that I want to treat people the way I want to be treated.”

The actress celebrated the book’s release via Instagram on Wednesday, April 9. “The absolute sweetest pub date!! 🥹,” she wrote alongside snaps from her book tour. “Thank you to everyone who has shared their kind words about our new book ‘When I Talk to God, I Talk About Feelings’ 🩷.”
